Location Lighting Tips

QUICK LOCATION LIGHTING TIP! Sometimes when shooting on location, space and electrical access is limited, both of which are critical in effective glamour and fashion photo shoots. However, positioned strategically, you can get great results using a single strobe.On this set I wanted to light the model while not overpowering the amazing sunset.Optimal settings to achieve this include a combination of settings to the shutter speed, aperture and the ISO so as not to allow the flash to overpower the natural light.The shutter speed should be set low enough to allow the natural light into the frame. The aperture should be set low enough so as not too allow too much of the flash to be captured. This may take a little trial and error.Sometimes the ISO setting is key in achieving the balancing you're looking for.Don't be afraid to be aggressive with your ISO settings. You may get a little more noise than you would normally be comfortable with. However, this isn't always a bad thing when going for a unique and artistic look and a bold lighting effect.Further, post production editing allows you to adjust the highlights & shadows to achieve just the right balance for an image that really pops!Remember, lighting is everything and it takes any number of lighting formulas to get just the right look you may be shooting for so be creative and don't ever be afraid to ...

When scheduling an outdoor portrait session with So7 Studios & Gallery, you maynotice that we recommend shooting an outdoor session during a very precise time ofday-- generally the last sixty to ninety minutes before the sun has completely set. This special window known to photographers as “The Golden Hour” is the period oftime when the light from the sun is at its most perfect. With its long rays diffusedacross the entire sky, the light creates a flattering glow and shimmer for pictureperfect skintones and deliciously warm portraits. During midday, when every ray of the sun seems to find its way to our delicate, over-exposed skin, the shadows created are usually too deep in contrast to the glare.Instead of fighting the harsh light, it’s better to schedule outdoor shooting duringthe Golden Hour when the sun still works its magic—but in our favor. The Light Sessions

We had a blast doing Emma Heath's style session TCU graduation! It's hard to believe it since she was only 17 when I first met her. Emma has the most beautiful dark red hair and golden skin so I knew she would look stunning with this cobalt blue backdrop. Not many people can pull off this type of high fashion ring light flash set up but, just as I thought, the light wrapped around her like a moth to a flame! Best wishes to Emma Heath! Her future is just as bright as she is.
